Chewing gum while peeling onions will keep you from crying

I’ve never tried this, and I guess nobody I know has ever either! Although I’ve heard that a slice of bread in our mouth will keep you from crying while peeling onions. Guess all these grandmothers’ tricks come from people who know their onions well.

Thinking about chewing gum or holding a slice of bread (although with some peanut butter on it) is an interesting way of keeping the tear glands safe and sound while chopping up the layers of this sulfurized cyclic amino acid rich veggie.
Now, why would anyone come up with such a stark idea? Actually when you give it a little deliberate thought, you’ll see why. Remember the dentist telling you to think of ice-cream while he’s knocking-off one of your teeth? Or the doctor telling you to think of the jokers in the circus while sticking a needle into your backside? Any guesses why? Yes, to keep you preoccupied so that you don’t feel the immediate striking pain. The same could be the case on the chopping board. The gum you’re chewing while chopping the onions to prepare a tasty meal might just keep you preoccupied so that you don’t concentrate of the pungent smell and enjoy the sweet flavor of the gum instead.
