Erich Alfred Hartmann (nicknamed “Bubi” or
“The Black Devil”) was a German fighter pilot during World War II and is
the highest-scoring fighter ace in the history of aerial warfare!
He claimed 352 aerial victories, and he was never shot down or force to land due to fire from enemy craft! As any other person, Hartmann enjoyed celebrating his victories. In March 1944, Hartmann was summoned along with three of his other colleagues to Adolf Hitler’s residence where he was getting an award from Hitler himself.
On the train, all four of them got drunk on cognac, champagne and pretty much anything they could find. By the end of the trip there were not able to stand by themselves. Major Nicolaus von Below (Hitler’s adjutant) decided to help them out.
After almost all of them sobered up, Hartmann was still intoxicated, he in fact even took a German officer’s hat from a stand and put it on, what he didn’t know is that it was Hitler’s hat he was wearing!
