A scientist won the Nobel Prize in Medicine for drinking a bacterium!

Helicobacter pylori is a microaerophilic bacterium found in the stomach. Contrary to the popular belief of stress being the main factor of stomach ulcers, it is Helicobacter pylori itself who creates it! And hence, creating more complex pathologies, such as gastritis, duodenal ulcers and even stomach cancer.

More than 50 % of the world’s population (that means 5 out of 10 people) harbors H. Pylori in their upper gastrointestinal tract! And infection is more prevalent in developing countries.Back in 1982, Dr. Barry Marshall drank a bacterium in order to prove that stomach ulcers were caused by Helicobacter pylori (bacteria) and not stress! He both developed stomach ulcers and won the Nobel Prize in Medicine! Thanks to his discovery, Doctors now focus on how to treat the bacteria itself and not the stress factor which was thought to be the main factor of stomach ulcers. If you want to be a great Doctor, you’ve got to do some crazy stuff at some point in your career!
