The US was ready to drop a nuclear bomb on Tokyo just four days after Japan surrendered!

The Empire of Japan surrendered on September 2, 1945 ending World War II. However, by the end of July 1945 the Imperial Japanese Navy was incapable of executing any missions and an invasion against the Japanese was only a matter of time.

Still, they pretended to be able to hold their own in public while privately speaking with the USSR about a peace agreement that would be in their favor. They didn't realize that the USSR was preparing an attack on Japan as they had agreed to do for Britain and the U.S. In two separate conferences.

On August 6, 1945 the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima and the second bomb dropped on Nagasaki on August 9, 1945. On August 15, 1945, Japan's emperor announced Japan's surrender. It was a good thing, too, because had he not done so just four days later a third atomic bomb was set to land on Tokyo. The surrender ceremony and ultimate end of the war happened on September 2, 1945 and Japan got to keep Tokyo intact.
