Also known as nematomorpha, this little guy is
a phylum of parasitoid animals superficially morphologically similar to
nematode worms, hence the name. They can be discovered in damp areas such as watering troughs, streams, puddles and even swimming pools!
The adult worms are free living, but the larvae are parasitic on beetles, cockroaches, orthopterans, and crustaceans. In other words, it spends the early part of it's life cycle eating away the innards of the grasshoppers and crickets it infects.
While inhabiting an insect, it will grow and eventually will drive the insect to commit suicide in water, via a form of mind control! And this way it will exit it's host.
The way they control the insect’s mind is by producing and injecting proteins into the brain of it's host! Grasshoppers better stay away from the pool.
