In the early 1960s, the National Institute of Mental Health conducted a number of experiments with mice.
One was called the mouse universe. Four pairs of mice were released
into a mice "utopia." There was no shortage of food, water or nesting
supplies, and there were no predators. The mice began to reproduce.
Soon they had filled the space, and that is when everything went wrong. The mice stopped reproducing, and there was a societal breakdown. There was more fighting, young were injured or abandoned. Males withdrew completely and kept to themselves. The population started to decline.
The scientists concluded that once the space and social roles were all filled, the social structure broke down. This was due to the stress the mice experienced with the large population. At least once scientist saw the experiment as a demonstration of the potential fate of mankind.
