Japan uses a robot baby seal to help dementia patients!

Watching someone suffer from Dementia is one of the most tragic things a person can witness, especially when it involves a loved one. Although it has been an ailment that has always existed, there has not been much progress toward it's treatment. Because scientists are not exactly sure why it occurs or how to prevent it, new diverse treatments are being studied.

One particularly interesting approach was developed by AIST, a leading Japanese industrial automation pioneer. They developed PARO, which is a robotic baby seal. Because there are many documented benefits of animal therapy, PARO was developed to combine science and nature. PARO has actually had an amazing success rate with helping Dementia patients stay with it.

It has been found to reduce patient stress and stimulate interaction. It works by responding to what it has experienced, just like a real animal! For example, if PARO is petted, it will repeat the action it performed before it received the pet. If a patient strikes the robot, it will no longer repeat the action that preceded being struck! In fact, PARO was named the World’s Most Therapeutic Robot by Guinness World Records!
