A family's skin color turned blue due to six generations of inbreeding!

Before you get any crazy ideas about trying to turn your own skin blue, know that this particular family changed color because of six generations of inbreeding!

Beginning in 1800 and continuing until the 1960s, the isolated Fugate family living near Troublesome Creek, Kentucky were so incestuous they developed a blood condition called methemoglobinemia.

This means that a recessive gene was being paired with itself to alter the composition of their blood, which turned brown instead of black. In fact, the great-great-grandfather on one person’s mother’s and father’s side was the same person!

These recessive genes caused a mutation, resulting in a blue tint entering their skin! If you don’t believe in the story, look to the right for proof in the family picture!
