An extremely rare 18-foot oarfish was found off the California coast!

A marine science instructor got the scare of her life when she spotted an 18-foot-long silvery fish when she was diving 15-feet deep off the coast of Southern California.

She calmed down when she realized it was just an oarfish, which are normally harmless. Then, she realized the fish was dead. So she snatched the tail and brought it back to shore.

The carcass weighs 400 pounds, and she needed 14 other people to carry it out of the water.

This is a very rare find, because oarfish are rarely seen, dead or alive. They also usually dive pretty deep - as deep as 3,000 feet - so they are rarely studied. Not much is known about their behavior or population.
