Electricity from plants

Ever wondered about how you’re going to manage life if all the sources of energy we currently have, is used up? Well, here’s a way – Generating Electricity from Plants. Before talking about how to obtain this energy, we should know a bit about how plants make their food.

Everyone knows that a plant uses solar energy and creates food in the form of glucose and other sugars. This is stored in the plant parts like roots, tubers and fruits. How does this exactly happen?
Plants have a pigment called chloroplast. It is the main thing responsible for creating food, i.e, through photosynthesis. It contains many compounds like Plastocyanin, Ferredoxin, NADP, etc, which help the plants to capture this sunlight. It first splits up water molecule, thus forming electrons. Through electron transfer, it forms ATP molecules. These are the basic sources of energy in a plant. Plants use these ATP molecules and form food.

Now, about the electricity. After all, electricity is nothing but the movement of electrons. And as said, electron transfer occurs during the formation of ATP molecules. So, can we use the electron transfer in plants to generate electricity? If so, can we efficiently extract it to use it? Even if we efficiently extract it, how long or how properly can we use it?

There has been some interesting developments in the study of generation of electricity from plants. A few eccentric scientists wanted to try this. So they grew a garden on their rooftop. They could easily charge a smartphone with it.

Recently, some scientists have developed a convenient way of extracting this electricity. They believe that we could efficiently run a whole building with the electricity taken from a patch of a forest. They tested this and proved it true. Although it is true that the materials which were used were very costly, it proved that plants are the future of energy extraction if cheap and convenient methods arise through research and development.

Isn’t it exciting to think that you could run your whole home, without having to pay for the electricity? The rates are going sky high right now. So, it would be useful for you to plant a tree or cultivate a garden. It may well help you in the future, where plants could provide us electricity!! So, plant a tree. Increase the green cover!!
